With the Oscar awards right around the corner, Tracee Ellis Ross and Kumail Nanjiani announced the nominees for the 91st Annual Awards show.

The Favourite and A Star Is Born led the nominations with at least eight nominations each. Following close behind is Black Panther with seven.

The Ryan Coogler directed film broke cultural barriers and smashed box office records as it became the highest grossing superhero film of all time in North America.

Making history, Black Panther has become the first superhero film to get a “Best Picture” Oscar nomination. It’s also up for Best Costume Design, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Original Score, Best Production Design and Best Original Song.

Black Panther’s “Best Original Song” nomination goes to none other than Kendrick Lamar. Earning his nomination for “All of The Stars” collaboration alongside SZA.

The 91st Oscar Awards seem to be a first for more than just superheroes, with Spike Lee achieving his first nomination for directing. After 30 years of working as a director, Lee’s work has finally been put up for “Best Picture” as well as earning himself a “Best Director” nomination.

His film BlacKkKlansman earned six nominations in total, making it the fourth highest nominated film of this year’s awards.
