Akon is getting into the cryptocurrency business In a major way.
The 45-year-old singer has teamed with the government in his hometown of Senegal, where he is designing his own “Crypto-City.”
The President of the country has parceled off over 2,000 acres of land, where Akon will build his Crypto-City, which will be built on the Blockchain.
The currency for trade Akon’s city is dubbed the Akoin, which is scheduled to hit the markets in the next two weeks.
“I think that blockchain and crypto could be the savior for Africa in many ways because it brings the power back to the people and brings the security back into the currency system and also allows the people to utilize it in ways where they can advance themselves and not allow government to do those things that are keeping them down,” Akon said during a panel at the 2018 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in France.
In addition to founding his hit label Konvict Muzic, Akon is also the founder of Akon Lighting Africa company, which he founded in 2013 to provide electricity to some of Africa’s most impoverished rural areas.
